The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the concept of emancipation through artistic expression, encouraging viewers to reflect on identity, history, and the ongoing journey towards equality.
The Fourth Annual Juneteenth Art Exhibition, curated by Grace Hampton, Professor Emerita at Penn State, showcases a diverse array of artistic expressions celebrating freedom, unity, peace, and justice. Running from June 14 to July 14, 2024, this exhibition features works by local and national artists in various media, including 2D and 3D art, photography, sculpture, and crafts.
The exhibition was open to artists of all ages, from K-12 students to adults, and judged by a diverse panel. The opening reception featured performances by local artists, including Roots of Life and the jazz trio Nick Letwin and Friends. The closing ceremony on July 13 will showcase traditional West African drummers and local hip hop artists.
This year's featured artist is KO, a 2024 Penn State graduate originally from Nigeria. KO's paintings and sculptures explore themes of value, hierarchy, and the interplay between historical events and contemporary society. Through a unique blend of slang, Yoruba, and vernacular, KO's work creates an accessible entry point for those often marginalized in traditional art spaces.
Professor Hampton notes, "The Annual Juneteenth Exhibition continues to grow in quality and depth of expression. It is an aesthetic celebration of the search for freedom, equity, and peace, as seen through the eyes of the artist and craftsperson."
The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the concept of emancipation through artistic expression, encouraging viewers to reflect on identity, history, and the ongoing journey towards equality.
