Oboe Studies

The Oboe Studio at Penn State is made up of talented undergraduate and graduate students with diverse backgrounds and career paths. Each student works with Dr. Andreas Oeste in individual lessons, studio classes, and reed classes, while having opportunities to perform in a variety of ensembles across the School of Music. The Oboe Studio prides itself on being highly collaborative, where each student’s voice is valued and mentored in an environment that advocates for inclusivity and belonging.

Each oboist receives an individualized 60-minute lesson every week with Dr. Oeste, focusing on developing into an excellent and diverse performer, teacher, and entrepreneur. There is a weekly studio class in which all oboists come together to perform for and learn from one another through performance classes, presentations, mock auditions, and more. Throughout the semester, famous guest oboists are invited to campus to give recitals and masterclasses. Dr. Oeste holds “reed hours” throughout the week, where students can receive additional reed instruction and ask questions outside of lesson times.

The Oboe Studio is fortunate to have all the equipment necessary for students to make reeds at a professional level, including gouging machines, shapers, and much more. All students majoring in oboe will learn to make their own reeds and have free access to this reed equipment.

Penn State Oboists have the opportunity to perform in a variety of ensembles and work with world-class conductors and coaches. Our oboists perform in orchestras, concert bands, the baroque ensemble, and chamber groups such as wind quintets and reed quintets.

Penn State is an exciting place to grow as an oboist and musician! If you are interested in the Oboe Studio, please reach out to Dr. Oeste with any questions. A free, introductory lesson is available to all interested prospective students.
