Horn Studies

The Penn State Horn Studio is comprised of a diverse group of students who come together to study horn! Students pursue a variety of different music degrees. The studio also has a rich history of dual majors and/or performance minors from other disciplines including engineering, biology, computer science, international politics, architecture, and communications.

All Penn State Hornists (undergraduate and graduate) receive a weekly individual, sixty-minute lesson. Weekly studio class (Fall) and Horn Ensemble (Spring) enrich the studio learning experience. The Penn State Horn Ensemble has been featured at numerous conferences and workshops; most recently at the 2019 International Horn Symposium (Ghent, Belgium) and the 2022 Southeast Horn Workshop (UNCG – Greensboro, NC). Upper-division and graduate students have the opportunity to conduct and rehearse the Horn Ensemble.

In addition to Horn Ensemble, students contribute to and make music with a wide variety of ensembles in the School of Music. They work with renowned faculty coaches and conductors in brass and woodwind quintets, wind bands, and orchestras.

The Penn State Horn Studio frequently hosts distinguished guest artists on campus for masterclasses and recitals. Guest artists enhance the depth and level of artistry of the students and provide networking opportunities for graduate school and professional endeavors.

Penn State is a unique place to learn and grow as a musician and a horn player! Studio alumni work in a wide variety of careers and fields: as band directors, professional performers, lawyers, and in hospitality management and the military. We invite you to explore the Penn State Horn Studio and the School of Music to see how we can help you realize your career aspirations and musical dreams! All interested prospective students are invited to take a free, introductory horn lesson.
