UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Julio Diarte, a doctoral candidate in architecture at Penn State, has been named a recipient of a John Roe Sustainability Award by the Sustainability Institute at Penn State. Diarte’s research addresses significant issues regarding the rapid growth of urban waste and housing deficit in developing parts of the world. With help from waste collectors, he was able to reuse nearly 80% of 1.2 tons of recovered material in the fabrication of building parts during a research experiment in Paraguay over the summer. Diarte and the other awardees were honored at a reception held on Dec. 11 at the Days Inn in State College. Find more information via ow.ly/QxEb50xxqpA.
