Architecture and Landscape Architecture Summer Camp returns to campus

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s annual Architecture and Landscape Architecture Summer Camp returns to the Stuckeman Family Building on the University Park campus July 24-28 after being held remotely the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The camp, which is intended for high school students interested in the fields of design, architectural engineering and/or construction management, allows students to practice design exercises and hands-on building and model-making activities in the very same space – with access to the same materials, drawing tables and board space – as current architecture and landscape architecture students in the Stuckeman School. Campers will also visit an active construction site on campus and a professional architecture office, go on a field trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Kentuck Knob house, and take in various lectures, films, campus tours and social activities. Brian Peterka, assistant teaching professor of architecture, is organizing this year’s camp and will be joined by Alec Spangler, assistant professor of landscape architecture, as well as current Penn State architecture and landscape architecture student teaching assistants in leading the camp activities. “The opportunity to return to an in-person camp means we can work collectively in a hands-on environment, fostering a sense of community and shared experience,” said Peterka. “Students will engage in the design thinking that is foundational to all architectural projects, immerse themselves in an environment full of supportive peers and design professionals, and begin to learn about the impact of design on the world.” The Architecture and Landscape Architecture Summer Camp, which is in its 18^th year, is an outreach service of the College of Arts and Architecture.
