Woohun Joo

Assistant Professor, Digital Arts & Media Design
Woohun Joo

Woohun Joo is an audiovisual artist and sonification researcher who creates sound from abstract visual art and other types of non-musical data. His projects mainly focus on how minimalistic visual art can be transferred to auditory domains and how his sound-making processes can be conversely visualized. Joo’s work explores the potential of visual and sound design as an integrated art form for multi-sensory user experience and communication design. His research and audiovisual installation have been published at conferences such as ACM Audio Mostly, the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), the International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD), and the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC).

Joo majored in graphic design at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, Korea. He worked professionally as a graphic designer in web design, editorial design, identity design, typeface design, and UI/GUI/UX design. He holds his master’s degree in Digital & Media from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in sound and multimedia technology with affiliation to the Human-Centered Design program and the Center for Human-Computer Interaction (CHCI) at Virginia Tech.
