Biography
Micaela Amato Amateau (b. 1945 New York) received her BFA from Boston University in 1968 and her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1973. She began exhibiting in New York City at Kornblee Gallery in 1974 and has since exhibited across the United States and internationally, including Angles Gallery, Paintings Edge, Skirball Art Museum, and Acme Gallery in Los Angeles; Forum Gallery, Nancy Hoffman Gallery, Betty Parsons Gallery, Bertha Urdang Gallery, and Jewish Museum in New York City; Heather James Galleries in Palm Desert; Marianne Deson in Chicago; Denver Art Museum; and Lulea International Expo in Sweden. Reviews include the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Artforum International, Art in America, Art News, Arts Magazine, and Women’s Art Journal.
Her work is in the private collections of Albert & Vera List, Paula Cooper, Lucy Lippard, Carol & Arthur Goldberg, and Elaine Guggenheim. Public collections include Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Bard College Hessel Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, Museum of Art & Design in New York City, Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Palm Springs Art Museum, SFMOMA, Chase Manhattan Bank, Museum of Contemporary Ceramics, and the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia.
She has curated dozens of exhibitions and written interviews with museum directors Marcia Tucker and Henry Hopkins, dealer Paula Cooper, critic Lucy Lippard, and others for ARTPRESS PARIS and Ocular Magazine, among others. Awards include National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Painting and in New Media, and Pollock Krasner Foundation Grants. Public lectures include the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Neuberger Art Museum at SUNY-Purchase, Norbotten Art Museum in Sweden, and San Antonio Art Museum.
