Biography
Dawn Pierce, a recognized mezzo-soprano, is celebrated for her vibrant approach to performance, teaching, and innovation. Committed to empowering individuals to embrace their unique voices, she is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of performers. In Fall 2024, she joined Penn State University as Assistant Professor of Music in Voice, bringing extensive experience and a forward-thinking vision to the opera program. Her goal is to integrate innovation with technique, professional skills, and personal well-being to support 21st-century musicians. Her philosophy has inspired students, with many advancing to prestigious programs like Juilliard and building successful careers in opera, on Broadway and in music education.
Previously, Dawn taught at Ithaca College for 15 years, earning a Faculty Excellence Award in 2022. She established the Opera Direction Certification program and the IC Opera Studio, and launched the Voice Intensive, which became the Arts Intensive – an interdisciplinary program recognized for its innovation. She was also instrumental in the Strategic Planning Committee, shaping the college’s vision and goals.
Internationally, Dawn founded the Opera Company of Middlebury Young Artist Program, providing professional development for emerging artists. A published instructor with The Great Courses, she developed a 24-lesson course, “How to Sing.” Her leadership extends to the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany, where she contributed to strategic initiatives.
Dawn's performance repertoire includes roles like Charlotte in Werther and Carmen. She actively champions composers from marginalized communities, recently commissioning and premiering a work addressing systemic racism called “Don’t Look Away.” Residing in State College, PA, with her family she enjoys hiking, gardening, and jewelry design.
