Once upon a time, in a small college town nestled among the hills , a weary traveler arrived with nothing but a cooking pot slung over his back. His stomach growled as he knocked on door after door, asking for a little food to ease his hunger. But each villager, suspicious or claiming to have little to spare, turned him away.
The traveler, undeterred, walked to the center of the village, placed his pot on the ground, and filled it with water from a nearby well. He gathered a few sticks and lit a fire beneath it. As the water began to boil, he dropped in a single, smooth stone from his pocket.
The villagers, curious about this strange behavior, started to gather around him.
“What are you doing?” one of them asked.
“I’m making stone soup,” the traveler replied with a smile. “It’s a delicious dish, though it could be even better with a bit of seasoning.”
Intrigued, one villager dashed home and returned with a handful of salt and pepper. The traveler stirred them in and tasted the soup thoughtfully.
“Ah,” he said, “it’s coming along nicely. Of course, a couple of carrots would make it even better.”
Another villager, eager to see how this mysterious soup would turn out, offered a few carrots from her pantry. The traveler thanked her and added them to the pot.
Little by little, the traveler mentioned other ingredients—potatoes, onions, a bit of meat—and each time, a villager stepped forward to contribute. Before long, the pot was filled with a rich, hearty soup, its aroma wafting through the air.
