On the occasion of Anton Bruckner's 200th birthday this year, we welcome the Atalante Quartet in concert at Penn State University. The musicians honor the great Austrian composer with their program "1824 - Bruckner's Schubert."
Throughout his life, Bruckner revered Schubert as a person, admiring his music and especially his works for voice. The quartet will perform the only string quartet ever composed by Bruckner, as well as Schubert's late Quartet No. 14 in D minor (D810), "Death and the Maiden." This piece is undoubtedly one of the most influential chamber music works and also celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.
In addition to these two works, the musicians will perform a quartet by Joseph Haydn, the founder of the string quartet genre. The four musicians grew up with these works and were equally influenced by these three composers, having been immersed in their music since early childhood—an experience unique to those raised in Austria.
Founded in 2014, the Atalante Quartet focuses on historically informed performances, aiming to interpret the music as close as possible to the composer's original intentions. The artists cherish the tradition of quartet playing and find great pleasure in making music together, inspiring, challenging, and encouraging one another. They are members of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz (former chief conductor: Dennis Russell Davies).
Don't miss the opportunity to hear the Austrian Atalante Quartet perform this special program from their homeland!
