John M. Anderson Endowed Lecture Series

in the School of Visual Arts

The John M. Anderson Endowment in Visual Arts was established in 2001, with the purpose of supporting outstanding programming, such as this lecture series and related activities with guest artists we bring to our campus to interact with our students and community.

Dr. John Muller Anderson, Professor Emeritus, was an Evan Pugh Research Professor of Philosophy, and the first director of Penn State’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities. His passion for the philosophy of art and painting, resulted in his generous gift, from which we, as a community, have greatly benefitted.

Rebecca Kiger

Rebecca Kiger is a documentary photographer, a Center for Contemporary Documentation fellow, and an artist-in-residence at high schools in the Rust Belt of Appalachia. She is a frequent contributor to Time, the New Yorker, the New York Times, and The Washington Post. She recently received awards from the Society of Environmental Journalists, Pictures of the Year, and World Press Photo for her year-long-project covering the toxic train derailment that took place in East Palestine, OH.

Eugene Agyei

Eugene Ofori Agyei is an artist and educator based in New York whose work explores the diasporic concept of displacement through themes of cultural identity and home, using material ritual and history.

In his work, ceramics, fabrics, yarns, and altered everyday objects are chosen for their complex histories, with the memories and sentiments they evoke serving as the starting point of the art-making process. Agyei’s work has been exhibited in group and solo shows across the U.S. and internationally.

David Hytone

David Hytone received his BFA in Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design after studying briefly at the Osaka University of Arts in Osaka, Japan. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including shows in Brussels and Ghent, Belgium, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Portland and Des Moines, Iowa. A recent visiting artist and lecturer at the J. Miller School of Architecture at the University of Indiana, he has work in numerous private and corporate collections including Microsoft, Facebook, Capital One, Swedish hospitals, Hilton and the permanent collection of King County, WA.

Kang Seung Lee

Kang Seung Lee is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in South Korea and now lives and works in Los Angeles. His work frequently engages the legacy of transnational queer histories, particularly as they intersect with art history. Lee’s work has been included in international exhibitions such as the 60th Venice Biennale (2024); Made in LA at Hammer Museum (2023); New Museum Triennial (2021); and Gwangju Biennale (2021). He also participated in documenta fifteen (2022) invited by Jatiwangi Art Factory.
